Mesa is big, and so are its trees.
Mesa covers a lot of ground and a lot of tree types. Central and west Mesa were citrus groves, and the older flood-irrigated neighborhoods still have big orange and grapefruit trees along with the eucalyptus that were planted as windbreaks. Dobson Ranch and the lakes communities have mature ash, pines and mulberry. Up in northeast Mesa, Las Sendas, Red Mountain Ranch and the Usery foothills are desert lots with native mesquite, palo verde and saguaro. Eastmark and the newer southeast communities have young, fast trees and active HOAs.

Storms, HOAs and local notes
Mesa's old eucalyptus windbreaks are some of the tallest trees in the Valley and they shed limbs in every big storm. If you have one over the house, a thinning and weight reduction is the smart move before July. In the HOA communities on the east side, sissoos and acacias are the common removals once they get root-heavy. And in the citrus neighborhoods, an old orange tree that has gone woody can usually be brought back with a proper structural prune instead of being cut down.
